101 Travel Stop, Oct 11 2009
What started as merely a stop to pee became an adventure in WTFness. At Exit 101 on I-40, nearly visible from the interstate, is a huge gas station/restaurant/gift shop called 101 Travel Stop. It's the only business within sight. It's enormous; it's got a second floor I didn't even go on. And it is full, FULL of random stuff. Aisles and aisles of souvenirs, carved marble, black velvet paintings, motorcycle gear, old-timey Western gear, marionettes, swords, mannequins, hats, jewelry, food, housewares. Mostly with a Mexican bent. It's like a Mexican yard sale got into some sci-fi replicator and cloned itself all over this building. And to top off the oddness, I saw a college-age kid roll up on HORSEBACK as I was leaving. Definitely a place to go back to.
